| Mace and nutmeg (Myristica fragans) come from the same plant. Nutmeg is a brown hard kernel with a distinctive woody smell and sweet nutty flavor and the more popular of the twosome. Used in sweet puddings, custards, cakes, biscuits, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (rum punches, egg nog, mulled wines) sprinkled over warm drinks like coffee and hot chocolate. In italy and France, it is used to flavor tortellini, ravioli, cannelloni, bechamel and bread sauces. In the Middle East, it is used with savory dishes like lamb. |
